Prayer Guide

Dear Grace Family,

God has heard our prayers. Thanks to all of you who joined us in our "40 Day Prayer" Journey over the last year. Whether you have prayed one prayer or prayed fervently and daily…thank you. God responds to the prayers of His people.

Now that we have a new senior pastor coming, here are some prayers that may guide you as you pray for your own life, our new pastor and his family as well as our church. May God cause you to grow closer as you spend time with Him.

Please use this guide as a prompt to pray your own prayers of praise & thanks, confession an intercession. I have taken some of these prayers from the old saints, but they still have meaning and breathe life into me and hopefully you as well.

Enjoy the Journey, Pastor Bob

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart;
I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. Psalms 9:1

Father, thank you for the way you have worked in our lives and in our church during these past months. Thanks for healing our brokenness, hurt and disappointment. Thank you for reminding us that as we receive your love and forgiveness we can give your love and forgiveness to others. Thank you for calling Pastor John to be our next pastor. We look forward to what you are going to do as we work together with you and our new pastor. Amen

And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in. Isaiah 58:11-12

Be, Lord Jesus, a bright flame before me, a guiding star above me, a smooth path below me, a kindly shepherd behind me: today, tonight, and forever.
Jesus as we launch out on this journey with a new leader, we look to You to show us how to continue to work together to make Grace a life-giving church.

“Therefore, I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?  And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?  And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?  Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.  But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:25-34

Lord Jesus, you told your friends not to worry about the future.
You showed them how to have the attitude of simple trust that young children have,
so that they could place themselves into the caring hands of your Father.
And so, I ask for the power of your Spirit that I may remain positive throughout all that is ordinary in my daily life.
Jesus as we look to the future with Pastor John may we trust you to continue to work in him and us to help us become the congregation You desire us to be.

I know that your touch can change people and situations, and so I ask you to join me in offering to our Father not only the good things of this DAY but also the suffering and sacrifices that I want to offer cheerfully and lovingly, and in a quiet and hidden way. And so, may any difficulties and frustration and pain of this DAY be transformed in your presence for God’s glory the benefit of others. Amen.
Christ, please be with Pastor John and his family as they prepare to move to Airdrie. They need to sell their home and business. Please look after all these details. And in the future when we walk through difficulties together, help us to believe the best about our pastor and one another at Grace.

Moses said to the Lord, “See, you say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’ Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.” And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.  For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?” Exodus 33:12-16

from ‘St Patrick’s Breastplate’

I bind unto myself today
The power of God to hold and lead,
His eye to watch, his might to stay,
His ear to hearken to my need.
The wisdom of my God to teach,
His hand to guide, his shield to ward;
The word of God to give me speech,
His heavenly host to be my guard.
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

Jesus, anoint Pastor John to be a leader who leads with humility and God-centred confidence. Help him to lead by Your power and spirit. May we lift up his hands as Aaron and Hur did for Moses when he gets tired and weary. (Exoudus 17)

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.
Eph. 1:18-19 NIV

May our ‘way of looking’ become more like yours

Lord, we come before you as we are. We ask you to take away from us all that makes us less than human. Strengthen us with the power of your Spirit that our attitude and outlook may develop, and our “way of looking” may become more like Yours.  Help us to remain positive -encouraging and appreciating one another, looking upon people in the same way that you do. Amen.

Father, we know there is no such thing as a perfect pastor or perfect church. Help us in our way of looking to see Pastor John and each other as a work in progress. Complete in you and yet continuing to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus.

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old.
Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:18-19

Healing our memories, Evelyn Underhill

Penetrate these murky corners where we hide our memories and tendencies on which we do not care to look, but which we will not yield freely up to you, that you may purify and transmute them.

The persistent buried grudge, the half-acknowledged enmity which is still smoldering, the bitterness of that loss we have not turned into sacrifice, the private comfort we cling to, the secret fear of failure which saps our initiative and is really inverted pride,  the pessimism which is an insult to your joy.

Lord, we bring all these to you,  and we review them with shame and penitence in your steadfast light.

Father, if there is still anything lingering in my heart that would keep me from being “all in” to what you want to do in and through me, please remove it now that I may live in life-giving joy and grace of Jesus.

Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this DAY our daily bread, and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Matt. 6:9-13

Loving Father, today may you be with Pastor John. May his and our first priority be to praise your holy name. Thank you for your protection and provision for our pastor and our church. Help Pastor John to become all that you intend as he leads Grace Church. May you receive all the glory, honor and power through his ministry among us. Amen
